Federation General Assembly (1-2 October 2010)

The No-Noma International Federation was funded by Bertrand Piccard, the charismatic “scientist adventurer”, in 2003 and is managed by the Winds of Hope Foundation, which is directed by Mr Philippe Rathle. The No-Noma International Federation is a Supporting Member of the FDI. Ms Carole Ballanfat, Manager, Membership Relations, represented the World Dental Federation at the meeting.

About 40 participants from 30 different associations and NGOs met to share experiences, develop synergies and share best practices to improve the effectiveness of their action in the fight against noma.

Noma, a terrible infection, which is lethal in 80% of the cases, has the following main predisposing factors: malnutrition, dehydratation, poor oral hygiene and living conditions and is mostly present in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Mr Benoit Varenne, the new Regional Focal Point WHO/AFRO, represented the World Health Organisation at the meeting and reported that WHO recently signed a cooperation agreement with Winds of Hope to fund prevention activities related to noma. Noma is one of the main WHO regional priorities as it is part of two main objectives that WHO is currently focused on:

  • the relaunch of the oral health strategy in Africa
  • the eradication of the list of neglected tropical diseases to which noma has been added.

In 2009 the FDI published The Oral Health Atlas which contents a chapter on noma co-written with WHO /AFRO. In 2010, the FDI launched the Data Mirror, which dynamically displays some oral health data from The Atlas online. FDI hopes to collaborate with WHO & the No-Noma International Federation to include noma data in the Data Mirror in future.

FDI was proud to contribute to the success of the first “Noma Day”, organised by the Winds of Hope Foundation and the No-Noma International Federation in 2008. This event helped bring this “face of poverty” out into the open and to collect nearly one million Swiss francs to increase prevention efforts. The Winds of Hope Foundation has decided to organise a second event to follow-up the Noma Day, which will be held in Geneva on September 2011. The FDI will assist the Winds of Hope Foundation and the No-Noma International Federation in the organisation of this event.
